November’s Colour Parade

We have been enjoying the last of nature’s colorful cavalcade this month. Now the reds, oranges, yellows, lime green are leaving the parade; brown, grey and white are stepping in.

Toronto shows its unique personality year ‘round on many colourful store fronts. Middle of winter? Doesn’t feel like it when you’re near stores like these.

But the experience of colour is not a feast for everyone’s eyes. And this is worthy of exploration.

In his book Chromophobia, David Batchelor deifines it as a fear of corruption or contamination through colour. Since antiquity, many attempts have been made to purge colour from art, literature and architecture….. “either by making it the property of some foreign body - the oriental, the feminine, the infantile, the vulgar or the pathological - or by relegating it to the realm of the superficial, the inessential or the cosmetic.”

Chromophobia: Who stole the colour from classical art? This BBC film explores prejudices that have built up over centuries. We are asked if we have a bias against colour in classical art?

Polychromy in Antiquity asks essential questions. Although ancient Greek and Roman sculptures are striking for the dominance of pure white marble, looks can be deceiving. Figures of gods, godesses and heroes were once richly clothed in vivid colors. This has been known this for centuries –- so why does the image of whiteness still persist?
