The Power of Personal Style / Clothing as Cultural Language
Clothing speaks before words do, signalling identity and intention, while personal style bends its codes into a personal voice. Throughout history, marginalized groups have used dress to defy norms and challenge power — here's how.
Ukrainian embroidery, known as the vyshyvanka, has evolved into a powerful symbol of national resilience and cultural defiance against Russia's invasion. Worn as a "second layer of armor", these traditional garments challenge the Kremlin's narrative that Ukraine lacks a distinct cultural identity. Embroidery Day in Ukraine is celebrated on on the third Thursday of May as a symbol of national unity.
From the 19th-century Dress Reform Movement to 1920s flappers, women have long adopted masculine silhouettes to reject restrictive societal expectations.
Old-fashioned judge robes trace back to 14th-century England. Originally crafted from bright silks and heavy furs in jewel tones like scarlet, violet, and green, they transitioned to plain black in the late 1600s as a sign of national mourning and to signify absolute impartiality.
European men adopted elaborate white powdered wigs and opulent silk clothing during the 17th and 18th centuries primarily to project extreme wealth, power, and nobility. This heavily aristocratic, gender-fluid style of menswear dominated European courts before crashing out of fashion in the wake of the French Revolution.
Eva Perón traded her extravagant European couture for humble, tailored suits, visually aligning herself with Argentina's descamisados (shirtless) to appear authentic and committed to their struggles. Volodymyr Zelensky's military-style attire reflects a nation at war, showing solidarity with his troops and people. Mahatma Gandhi shed his Western suits for a simple dhoti and shawl in 1921, aligning himself with India's impoverished rural masses and promoting social equality, foreign textile boycotts, and economic self-reliance in the independence movement.
The post-WWII "anti-fashion" movement of the 1950s, marked by the emergence of the first distinct youth culture, challenged traditional gender norms through style.
Again, many young women rejected restrictive, hyper-feminine post-war gender roles by adopting durable, practical, and traditionally masculine clothing. They chose jeans and plaid shirts, simple plain T shirts, and surplus military clothes in rebellion against the feminine gender roles. The philosophy of grunge fashion is rooted in anti-consumerism, radical authenticity, and a rejection of the polished, expensive aesthetic that dominated the 1980s.
Throughout history, the LGBTQ+ community has weaponized fashion as a tool for rebellion. From hiding in plain sight with coded signals to defying gender norms and challenging capitalism, queer style is a visual manifestation of survival and resistance. David Bowie and Grace Jones used androgyny and gender-blending as a form of artistic reinvention, showing that fashion could transcend fixed gender norms and become a statement of power and identity.
Queer style is a fluid, gender-expansive mode of self-expression that defies traditional binary dress codes. It blurs the lines between masculine and feminine, often remixing vintage pieces, work-wear, hyper-feminine elements, and androgynous silhouettes to signal identity, challenge societal norms, and celebrate community.
Some prominent avenues of queer style include: Androgyny & Gender-Blending— Combining traditionally masculine and feminine pieces, Hyper-Femininity—Subverting expectations by wearing overly "girly" elements, Subtle Symbolism—Using historical or modern signalling through colour and symbols, such as wearing lavender, violets, or subtle pride colour palettes integrated into everyday outfits.
